Immigration to Denmark beats all records
02-07-2008

Economy:

In just five years, the number of residence permits in Denmark almost doubled - from 33,363 in 2002 to 58,569 in 2007, and the trend continues, show new figures from the Danish Immigration Service, who also makes clear that immigration to Denmark has changed in nature, writes Berlingske Tidende.

Most of the foreigners who are coming to Denmark are from Europe including the new EU countries and they come here to work or study. In 2007, 37,523 residence permits were given for work and education purposes compared to 13,310 in 2002.

"It is extremely pleasing that the foreigners who come here is contributing to the Danish society," states Karen Ellemann, spokesman on integration for Venstre, Denmark's Liberal Party  and she is backed by the supporting party DF and the Socialists. In their opinion the development shows that the immigration law - and last year's regulations - has worked.

The Danish Parliament has just adopted a second amendment to the immigration law so that even more people can come to Denmark to work. The minimum income of specialists in specific areas who can get a “job card” in Denmark, is now reduced from EUR 60000 to EUR 50000 and the Danish Parliament is now able to issue permits to certain occupational groups according to the needs on the labour market.
