Celltech Group is a leader in European biotechnology. In 2001,
the Celltech Group decided on a new strategy to build a sales and
marketing channel for its future pipeline products. Among other
things, this meant that a Nordic sales and marketing organisation
had to be built from scratch.
The Nordic headquarters was to be responsible for several
functions including budgeting, controlling, sales, marketing,
distribution, finance and administration. Other functions, such as
human resources/recruiting, IT and registration were to be
outsourced.
An extensive analysis process started focusing on the
Scandinavian business centres of Copenhagen, Stockholm and Malmö.
The analysis recommended a Nordic headquarters location in
Copenhagen. The deciding factors for choosing Copenhagen were
Copenhagen Airport’s many connections to the other Nordic
countries, and to the UK, as well as the short distance from the
airport to the city centre. Furthermore, Copenhagen has a very
skilled labour force with regard to biotechnology. Other reasons
for the decision were the flexible labour regulations, office rent
costs, total salary costs, and the quality of life. In
2002,Celltech Nordic started operating.
