Reviewers, artists and architects are enthusiastic about the Royal Danish Theatre’s new playhouse which recently was presented to the public.
The receipt was enthusiastic from the players going to perform there, from architects as well as from town planners.
The playhouse which is designed by architect Lene Tranberg from Lundgaard & Tranberg is for example characterised as “an elegant and poetic building which is located brilliantly in proportion to the harbour and its closest neighbours.”
The building which is located on the Kvæsthus Bridge from where the ships previously departed for Norway is built from bricks of hard burnt clay which changes shades according to the weather and the time of year and the daily rhythm, from light and grey to dark and black with many fine shades.
Moreover, Copenhagen Authorities have decided to accept a present from ship owner A.P. Møller who will present Copenhagen with a pedestrian bridge across the harbour entrance from Nyhavn to Operaen to connect the Royal Danish Theatre’s two houses and the entire city.
The Royal Danish Playhouse is to be officially inaugurated on 16 February 2008 with its first performance “Hamlet”. The construction work has been going on for three years and cost EUR 120 million paid for by the Danish government. The building totals 20,000 square metres and its 3 stages are seating altogether 1,000 persons.
