Culture and attractions

Gladsaxe was originally a rural municipality of four villages - Gladsaxe, Buddinge, Mørkhøj and Bagsværd - but it has grown rapidly over the past 50 years. Gladsaxe municipality is attractive to both younger and older generations and has an active cultural life and many scenic areas. Through an active participatory democracy and excellent public service, Gladsaxe municipality is constantly striving to create the finest possibilities for its citizens' working life and leisure time. With the traditionally low Danish crime rates, the area is safe and its close proximity to kindergartens, primary, secondary and higher education facilities ensures quick access to numerous schools, both public and private, as well as universities.

Gladsaxe is surrounded by forest to the north, wetlands to the north-west and Høje Gladsaxe Park to the south. Throughout the summer, public transport boat routes ply Lake Bagsværd, Lake Lyngby and Lake Fure. In summer in the local parks, outdoor events and entertainment are very popular.

Local cultural life is outstanding. Gladsaxe Ny Teater, a renowned theatre venue, and the main library are the leading cultural institutions. The Gladsaxe Bio cinema shows the latest international feature films and stages live concerts. We also have a large music and painting school where children can develop their artistic skills after school hours. In Bagsværd you can also see the only church ever designed by the world famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon.

Sports play an important role throughout the municipality. The many sports facilities are used by citizens of all ages. Lake Bagsværd is the training facility for both local rowing clubs and the Danish elite. The lake is also the arena for many international rowing contests. In Gladsaxe Sports Centre you can swim in the indoor and outdoor pools, play badminton, bowling, football and much more. At Bagsværd Stadium you can play football, athletics, tennis and related sports. Finally, Bagsværd Indoor Swimming Pool attracts many families with its child-friendly facilities.
